A high grade steel called "Cor-Ten". This steel has a better sound than any other steel of it's type. Cor-Ten is guaranteed to rust®, but will rust on the surface only, then seal itself so in normal conditions it will never rust into the bell. Each side of a Wind Works bell has a different gauge steel, giving it three or four distinct and different tones. Many different types of material for the striker have been tried since 1977, when Wind Works first started making their bells. A poly-plastic with the right density gives the bells the most beautiful sound. Wind Works bells are completely hand made. The pieces of steel are made and stocked to put the bells together in larger quantities. Wind Works uses only the best material, consequently, some sets of bells will have more steel rejected and take longer to make that set of bells. Wind Works bells are among the most durable on the market. Exposed to the weather, a bell will start to rust, builds a protective coating and stops rusting. Depending on the humidity and where hung, bells quickly begin the rusting process. The final coat builds over a period of several months to a year. Chains and breezecatchers are made of a mild steel and will rust to match the bell. No two bells are exactly alike. Tones may vary slightly from one batch of steel to another. All bells come with a magnet that allows you to turn off the bell, and all moving parts are replaceable.
